Understand the signs of substance use care

Because substance use issues affect people in different ways, there isn't a single test that can determine a diagnosis. Instead, health care providers use a variety of tools and information to gain a holistic understanding of the individual's situation. Here are some of the key components of an assessment:

  • Medical and mental health history: This helps identify any underlying medical or mental health conditions that may be contributing to or affected by substance use.
  • Behaviors surrounding substance use: This includes assessing the frequency, amount, and context of substance use, as well as its impact on the individual's life, relationships and responsibilities.
  • Substance use patterns: This may involve drug tests to confirm the presence of substances and provide information about patterns of use.
  • Prescription drug monitoring program reports: These reports can help identify potential misuse of prescription medications.

By considering all of these factors, health care providers can make an accurate diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan to address unique needs.

Treatment

Once a diagnosis has been made, treatment for a substance use issue is highly personalized and will vary by individual, but may include one or a combination of approaches such as treatment programs, therapy, support groups, medication and self-help programs.

Nurture your mental and emotional health

There’s a strong link between emotional wellbeing and substance use. For example, often alcohol and drugs are used to self-medicate when someone is dealing with a mental health issue like depression — which also tends to worsen mental health over time (read more). Taking care of yourself and nurturing your emotional health can help you learn to avoid or overcome the challenges associated with substance use. You have access to a wide range of benefits and resources through Dow to help you care for your emotional health.
