Raising the bar on mental health
When thinking about wellbeing, a focus on physical health often takes center stage. And while eating right, staying active and getting a good night’s sleep are all vital to being well, the critical importance of mental and emotional wellbeing is often overlooked. That's why, as Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, we’re putting a spotlight on it — emphasizing that a focus on mental and emotional health throughout the year is essential to feeling your best.

Research shows: About one in five Americans struggles with a mental health disorder
Even if you don’t suffer from mental illness, you likely know someone who does. This underscores the importance of awareness, understanding and support. If you or a loved one are struggling to cope, are experiencing persistent symptoms or you’re just not sure where to begin in improving your mental health, know that you have access to resources through Dow’s benefits to help with life’s challenges, big or small, so you can thrive and become your best self.
It's ok not to be ok — and to talk about it
Words matter, and it’s important to be intentional with your choice of words when talking about mental health conditions to reduce the stigma. After all, we all need a little extra support from time to time — you’re not alone.
Make your mental health a priority
Your emotional health has a direct impact on how you feel and perform. Taking care of yourself can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness and increase your energy levels — leaving you feeling better equipped to handle whatever life sends your way. Not sure how to prioritize self-care in your daily routine? Start by…
- Managing your overall health and wellbeing. Eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep and exercise regularly to help keep you feeling your best — both emotionally and physically. The Dow Wellbeing Portal has resources to help you build healthy habits and reach your personal health goals. If you need a bit more motivation and support as you build better habits, you also have access to up to six free coaching sessions through the Spring Health Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
- Practicing mindfulness. At its root, mindfulness is about slowing down, being in the present and balancing your thoughts and actions. Put into practice, it can mean anything from dedicated meditation and practicing breathing techniques to thoughtfully preparing and sharing a healthy meal with loved ones. The Dow Wellbeing Portal offers daily, self-guided courses to help you take the first step.
- Starting a journal. Not only can journaling help reduce stress and improve your mood, but it also serves as a way of processing your emotions and can even help you better understand certain situations.
- Talking to someone. Whether a friend, family member, trusted colleague or therapist, consider all available options for long-term support and building coping techniques to help your mental wellbeing. Keep in mind, you and your dependents have access to 24/7 crisis support at no additional cost to you, as well as up to six free counseling sessions per year through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). We also encourage you to join one of our 10 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to bond and connect with your colleagues.
- Making time to unwind and recharge. Whether that’s drawing, connecting with nature, listening to music or another hobby, carve out some time each day to focus on something that brings you joy and helps you relax.
Take a “time out”
Being able to take the time away you need is strongly tied to your overall wellbeing. Having the flexibility to meet both your work and non-work priorities allows you a chance to rest, spend time with friends and loved ones and enjoy life beyond work. Dow offers a generous vacation policy, and we encourage you to make the most of it. So give yourself permission for a little “me time” — the Dow vacation policy gives you the flexibility to enjoy time away from work while still being paid. Learn more.
